With a DAW it's easy to fire up a drum loop, add a bass line and some sustained chords. Everybody can do this in a few minutes and that's what it sounds like: All the same. Boring. The Confines Of a DAW

Recordings are static. Trying out different approaches with a DAW is extremely tedious. Often the best ideas come when a song is already half finished. Then you have to change everything by hand, re-record it, or laboriously rearrange it note by note and instrument by instrument in the piano roll (and do it again for each variation).

Some plug-ins help with chords, but they can't control the entire song. Working within a plug-in window is cumbersome. Even chord tracks can't do magic. Forcing notes into a grid after the fact just doesn't sound good. Synfire has the intelligence to do this much better and brings everything you need together in one environment.

Although Synfire hosts your instruments (audio plug-ins) and offers basic mixing capabilities, it doesn't want to replace your DAW or notation program. It is meant to complement them. You can export your work in part or as a whole with drag & drop. Or save Standard MIDI Files (SMF) and notation formats like MusicXML and LilyPond.
